Ex-home secretary Jahangir Alam remanded in murder case

Published: 14 May 2025, 2:20:46

A Dhaka court has granted a two-day remand for former home secretary Jahangir Alam in connection with the murder of Sheikh Mehedi Hasan Junayed during an anti-discrimination protest.

On Wednesday (May 14), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhazur Rahman issued the order after a hearing.

Investigators from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) had sought a five-day remand, while the defense, led by lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, requested for bail and dismissal of the remand plea.
The prosecution then opposed bail and the court ultimately denied it, allowing two-day of custodial interrogation.

The case stems from an incident on August 5, 2024, when Junayed, a participant in a protest march near the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, was fatally shot. According to the case file, assailants opened fire on demonstrators and Junayed was struck in the head. He was later pronounced dead at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital.

A murder case was filed with Bangshal Police Station on September 5, 2024. Jahangir Alam was arrested on October 1 and has since been in custody. This is the first remand granted in the case.
