Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury paid a courtesy call on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban on Monday afternoon.
During the meeting, the chief justice congratulated Fakhrul on assuming office as president and briefed him on the Supreme Court’s activities, court operations and challenges facing the judiciary, according to President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam.
The chief justice highlighted the growing backlog of cases, shortage of skilled manpower and structural problems in the judiciary, seeking the president’s cooperation in addressing them.
He said more cases are being filed every day than are being disposed of, making it increasingly difficult to reduce the backlog.
The president stressed expanding and strengthening alternative dispute resolution and the village court system to help ease the backlog. He also assured the chief justice of taking necessary steps to address other challenges.
The president’s secretary, military secretary and press secretary were present at the meeting.
