Sylhet Agricultural University gets new VC amid teachers’ protests

SAU Correspondent : Prof Dr Muhammad Shafi Ullah Majumdar has been appointed vice-chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), amid a two-week movement by BNP-backed teachers, officers and employees demanding the removal of the university’s previous VC.
The appointment was made through a notification issued today (28 September), signed by Assistant Secretary Md Sultan Ahmed on behalf of the president.
According to the notification, President and Chancellor Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed Prof Dr Muhammad Shafi Ullah Majumdar as SAU vice-chancellor for a four-year term under Section 10(1) of the Sylhet Agricultural University Act, 2006.
Prof Shafi Ullah is a professor at the Department of Agricultural Extension and Information System at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.
His appointment comes as teachers, officers and employees aligned with the BNP had been demonstrating for around two weeks, demanding the removal of outgoing VC Prof Dr Md Alimul Islam.
The protesters had accused Alimul Islam of various irregularities and corruption and said their movement had disrupted academic and administrative activities at the university.
Prof Dr Md Alimul Islam, a professor at the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene at Bangladesh Agricultural University, was appointed vice-chancellor of SAU on 17 October 2024.
The government appointed the new vice-chancellor amid the ongoing protests.
