Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikrom has said Bangladesh and Kosovo share common experiences of independence and cultural ties, noting that the people of Kosovo made the ultimate sacrifice for their country’s independence.
He made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with Kosovo Ambassador to Bangladesh Lulzim Pllana at his office on Wednesday (November 4).
The Speaker said the democratic rights of the people of Bangladesh had been undermined over the past 17 years through farcical elections. He alleged that the Awami League government had established a reign of terror through enforced disappearances, killings, extrajudicial killings and vote rigging.
He added that the United Nations fact-finding report had exposed the brutal and repressive nature of the previous government’s rule.
Hafiz Uddin said the July mass uprising of 2024 ended Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian rule and paved the way for the restoration of Bangladesh’s democratic journey.
He described the 13th parliamentary election as one of the fairest, most credible and free elections in the country’s history, adding that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was working to fulfil public expectations.
Ambassador Lulzim Pllana said a new democratic chapter had begun in Bangladesh. He also praised the active participation of lawmakers in parliamentary debates in the current parliament.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s large young and working-age population, the ambassador said the country’s youth could contribute significantly to the economy through quality education and knowledge of information technology.
He expressed gratitude to Bangladesh for recognising Kosovo as an independent state and invited the Speaker to visit Kosovo.
During the meeting, both sides emphasised the formation of parliamentary caucus groups between the two countries, expansion of trade and investment, joint academic and research activities, and exchanges in sports and culture.
Representatives of the Kosovo Embassy, the Secretary of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
