A mobile court in Sylhet city today sentenced a businessman to one year of imprisonment and fined three business establishments a total of Tk 1.80 lakh for manufacturing unauthorised medicines and selling counterfeit and substandard products.
The joint drive was conducted by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) and the district administration.
DNCRP Sylhet Divisional Office Deputy Director Md. Ariful Islam Mishu and District Administration Executive Magistrate Md. Rafiqul Islam led the drive.
The convicted businessman was identified as Shah Jamal Uddin.
According to Ariful Islam Mishu, one of the establishments was found manufacturing unauthorised medicines using hazardous chemicals that could cause serious damage to the human immune system. Although the packaging carried the label “Pabna, Bangladesh”, the traders failed to provide valid information about the people behind the operation or the actual source of production.
Following the findings, Executive Magistrate Md. Rafiqul Islam sentenced the businessman involved in the operation to one year of simple imprisonment and fined him Tk 1 lakh.
Two other establishments were fined Tk 80,000 in total for selling unauthorised baby food and marketing substandard products using copied trademarks and packaging of other companies.
The DNCRP official said drives against adulterated and counterfeit products would continue to protect public health.
