Moulvibazar Correspondent : Armed robbers looted gold ornaments, cash and other valuables worth more than Tk 50 lakh after holding the family members of a retired schoolteacher hostage by arms at his house in Rajnagar upazila of Moulvibazar early Friday.
Kandarpa Kumar Bhattacharya, a retired schoolteacher from Nandiura village in the upazila, told reporters that 10 to 12 armed men broke into his house at around 2:45am after breaking down the door.
He said his daughters had come to visit him during the Puja holidays and had brought gold ornaments with them.
The robbers held the family members hostage at gunpoint and tied their hands, feet, eyes and mouths with pieces of cloth, he alleged.
They then broke open an almirah and looted about 15 bhori of gold ornaments, Tk 40,000 in cash and other belongings worth more than Tk 50 lakh, he said.
Kandarpa Kumar also claimed that he was injured during the attack.
He alleged that one of his daughters called the national emergency service 999 while the robbers were still inside the house, but police arrived about an hour later, despite the house being only three kilometres from the police station.
Rajnagar police station officer-in-charge Enamul Haque Chowdhury, however, told that police visited the scene immediately after receiving the information.
Legal action would be taken after police received a written complaint, he added.
