Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has introduced a special fuel relief scheme to help vulnerable citizens cope with rising fuel prices amid instability in the Middle East.
Under the scheme, motorcycle, rickshaw and Qingqi users will receive Rs 500 in weekly relief, while owners of cars up to 800cc will receive Rs 100 per litre relief on up to 10 litres every 10 days.
More than 5.8 million people registered within eight days of the nationwide rollout, with around 4.7 million already benefiting from the scheme.
The initiative uses SMS registration, digital verification and fuel tokens to deliver the relief directly to eligible citizens.
The government has also made changes to the scheme based on public feedback. Eligibility for two- and three-wheelers was extended to vehicles up to 20 years old, registration through SMS to 9771 was made free and the five-litre minimum fuel purchase requirement was removed.
The Ministry of IT and Telecom developed the digital registration and verification system, while the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting conducted nationwide awareness campaigns.
The scheme aims to provide immediate fuel relief to working and lower-income citizens affected by the global rise in fuel prices.
