Law and order better now than before 13th national polls: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Wednesday said the law and order situation is now better than it was before the 13th parliamentary election, expressing confidence that the upcoming local government elections can also be held fairly.
“If we could hold the 13th national parliamentary election fairly under that situation, we will be able to do so again,” he said.
He made this remarks while talking to journalists at Rajarbagh Police Lines after inaugurating a training course on enhancing police skills and capacity for performing election duties professionally ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
The training programme for police personnel will begin on 16 September.
Asked whether members or supporters of the banned Awami League could join the polls, the CEC said, “The local government election would not be party-based. Only those who are eligible under the law will be able to take part.”
Nasir Uddin said the Election Commission (EC) had organised the parliamentary election and would also be able to conduct the local polls. Both the commission and police have constitutional responsibilities in ensuring the election, he said.
He added that the commission would not issue any unlawful instructions. Concerns about a free and fair election had largely eased after the 13th national election, and the commission would ease them further.
Regarding police requests for support, he said they had reported a shortage of vehicles and sought funds. The police lost vehicles and logistics during the July 2024 uprising.
He said Ansar-VDP and BGB would begin training soon. Body-worn cameras, CCTV cameras and measures would be used at all polling centres.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir said the police had been “100% successful” in protecting their image over the past six months amid the law and order situation.
Asked about the upcoming election, he said, “A government formed by a political party is a democratic government. We will do everything necessary to ensure a fair election.”
