Eid brings a different kind of joy. The house stays busy from morning, the aroma of spices fills the kitchen, relatives gather together, everyone eagerly enjoys the freshly cooked Qurbani meat, and families sit around the same table sharing meals and memories. Especially during Eid-ul-Adha, the food arrangements become even more special. Beef bhuna, korma, rezala, kebab, kala bhuna, biryani – every dish carries emotions, traditions, and happiness.
And honestly, during these few days, many people want to forget words like “diet” or “calories.” That is completely natural. After all, festivals are meant to be enjoyed with special food and extra happiness.
However, as a Nutritionist, I often notice a common pattern – just 2-3 days after Eid, many people start experiencing certain complaints. Some feel heaviness in the stomach, some suffer from gas or acidity, while others complain about headaches, fatigue, discomfort, or sudden weight gain.
The reason behind this is actually quite simple. Our bodies are usually accustomed to a certain eating pattern throughout the year. But during Eid, we suddenly consume much more oily, spicy, fatty, and calorie-dense foods than usual. Along with that, irregular sleep, low water intake, and reduced physical activity together create extra pressure on the body.
Does that mean we should avoid Eid foods? Absolutely not. Eid should be enjoyed fully. However, maintaining a little balance can help us enjoy the food while also keeping our bodies healthy. Because healthy eating does not mean deprivation – it means enjoying food mindfully.
What problems can excessively rich foods cause?
1. Indigestion: Eating too much meat, oily foods, and heavy meals at once puts extra pressure on the stomach. This may lead to:- Gas, Bloating, Indigestion, Nausea, Stomach discomfort.
Especially when someone skips meals for a long time and suddenly eats a very heavy meal, the problem becomes more noticeable.
2. Acidity & gastric problems : Very spicy and oily foods can increase stomach acid production, which may cause:
* Heartburn
* Acid reflux
* Sour belching
* Gastric discomfort
3. Fatigue & body discomfort : Many people think eating more gives the body more energy. But in reality, excessively heavy meals can make the body feel sluggish because digestion itself requires a lot of energy.
As a result, people may experience:
* Sleepiness
* Laziness
* Heaviness in the body
* Tiredness
4. Weight gain : During Eid, foods like: Biryani, Korma, Soft drinks, Sweets, Fatty meat dishes can easily increase calorie intake. If physical activity decreases at the same time, those extra calories begin to store as body fat.
5. Pressure on cholesterol & heart health: Excessive intake of saturated fat and fatty meat over a long period may:
* Increase cholesterol levels
* Raise blood pressure
* Increase heart disease risk
People with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or existing heart conditions should be especially careful.
6. Dehydration : During Eid festivities, many people drink less water while consuming more salty and protein-rich foods. This increases the body’s water requirement and may lead to:
* Headaches
* Weakness
* Dehydration
* Constipation
How can we balance our eating during Eid?
Portion Control is the Most Important : Enjoy every food, but avoid overeating at once.
Eating slowly and in moderate amounts helps:
* Improve digestion
* Reduce overeating
* Keep the body comfortable
Balance your plate: Instead of filling your plate only with meat, include- Salad, Vegetables, Lentils, Fiber-rich foods. These help support digestion and overall balance.
Reduce excess fat : Try to avoid visible fat and excess oil as much as possible. Especially:
* Excess oil floating on curries
* Very fatty portions of meat should be limited.
Drink more water : Try to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.
Instead of soft drinks, healthier options include:
* Lemon water
* Coconut water
* Homemade refreshing drinks
Stay Physically Active : Avoid lying down all day after meals. Light activities like: Walking, Family walks, Gentle movement can support digestion.
Do not skip breakfast : Many people skip breakfast and directly eat heavy meals later in the day, which creates extra stress on the body.
Instead, start the day with lighter balanced foods like- Eggs, Fruits, Oats, Light nutritious meals
Eid celebrations are never complete without delicious food. So there is no reason to feel guilty about enjoying your favorite dishes. However, our bodies also have limits, and understanding those limits is very important.
