Shaikh Rabiul Alam, Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping, has assured that public transport will receive sufficient fuel starting 15 March, ensuring uninterrupted services during the busy Eid period.
Speaking on Friday during a visit to Kamalapur Railway Station, the first day of Eid train operations, the minister emphasised that fuel shortages will not trigger fare hikes or disrupt transport services.
“The government is committed to preventing any transport crisis caused by fuel scarcity,” he added.
Highlighting the scale of the annual Eid exodus, Shaikh Rabiul Alam noted that approximately 1.25 to 1.5 crore people leave Dhaka over just two to three days, an extraordinary movement rarely seen in other cities worldwide. Despite the challenge, the government is taking all necessary measures to ensure smooth travel.
On the rail front, the minister said that a minimum of 85–87 locomotives is required to avoid major schedule disruptions. Currently, 78 are in operation, with a few more expected to join over the next two days to stabilise train services.
This proactive planning comes as part of broader efforts to modernise public transport and ensure safe, reliable travel during one of the nation’s busiest travel periods.
