Gold prices reach unprecedented high

Gold prices in Bangladesh have surged to an all-time high, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (Bajus) increasing the rate of 22-carat gold by Tk 2,928 per bhori.
The revised price now stands at Tk 147,818 per bhori, the highest recorded in the country’s history. The latest adjustment takes effect from Thursday, February 6, following a rise in the price of refined gold in the local market a day earlier.
Under the new pricing structure, 21-carat gold is set at Tk 141,099 per bhori, while 18-carat gold now costs Tk 120,944 per bhori. Meanwhile, the price of traditional gold has been fixed at Tk 99,529 per bhori.
Bajus has clarified that the final retail price must include a 5% value-added tax (VAT), as mandated by the government, along with a minimum 6% labour charge determined by the association. However, the total labour cost may vary based on the design and quality of the jewellery.
This is the second price hike in February, following an earlier increase on February 1, when the cost of 22-carat gold rose by Tk 2,099 per bhori, reaching Tk 144,890. The soaring prices align with global trends, as fluctuations in international gold rates and currency exchange values continue to impact the local market.
