The government is set to sign an agreement with European aerospace giant Airbus on Wednesday for the acquisition of 10 aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines, with the delivery schedule expected to be finalised amid efforts to strengthen the national carrier.
A signing ceremony titled ‘Spreading Our Wings Together’ will be held at a hotel in the capital to mark the agreement between Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited and Airbus.
Civil aviation and tourism minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, state minister Humayun Kabir, Invest Bangladesh executive chairman Ashik Chowdhury, and Airbus India and South Asia president and managing director Jürgen Westermeier are scheduled to attend the ceremony.
The minister said on Tuesday that the government was working to finalise the agreement and stressed the need to expedite the delivery schedule, with Airbus deliveries expected to begin before 2030.
Millat made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with a delegation from German airline Lufthansa, led by German Ambassador to Bangladesh Rüdiger Lotz, at his office in Dhaka.
The meeting focused on air connectivity between Bangladesh and Germany, the development of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and other issues of mutual interest.
The minister noted that there were significant opportunities to expand cooperation in the civil aviation sector and sought German assistance in developing Bangladesh as a regional aviation hub.
He suggested that Lufthansa could invest in establishing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities in Bangladesh and assist in developing skilled manpower in the country.
Millat also sought Germany’s cooperation in lifting the European Union’s ‘High-Risk Cargo & Mail’ classification imposed on air cargo originating from Bangladesh since 2017.
He highlighted that Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and Osmani International Airport had recently achieved security audit ratings of over 90 per cent, adding that the government had taken concrete measures to address observations raised by the EU.
The Lufthansa delegation and the minister also discussed enhancing direct air connectivity and fostering cooperation in the tourism sector.
