Police rescued a young woman from Jaflong in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet on Monday night as her newlywed husband and three others allegedly planned to traffic her to India.
Police also arrested the woman’s husband, Ashkur Rahman, 26, and three others in connection with the alleged trafficking attempt.
The others are identified as Zahirul Islam, 25, of Nishchamgram, Kawsar, 23, of Palgaon village, and Md Sagar Mia, 23, of Gobdia village under Bhaluka police station in Mymensingh, police said.
Police said Ashikur had married the woman three months ago and planned to traffic her to India.
According to police, Ashikur took his wife to Jaflong on the pretext of visiting the tourist spot and they checked into a hotel at Ballaghat in the Jaflong area on Monday afternoon. His three friends later joined them at the hotel.
The woman overheard Ashikur and his friends discussing the alleged trafficking plan and called the police from her mobile phone, police said.
Gowainghat police station officer-in-charge Omar Fauk said police rushed to the hotel around 8:00pm after receiving the call and rescued the woman and arrested the four.
He said the woman later filed a case with the police station under the Human Trafficking Prevention and Suppression Act against the four accused.
‘The arrested were produced before Sylhet District Judicial Magistrate’s court on Tuesday noon, and the court ordered that they be sent to jail,’ the OC said.
