Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has used 1,000 units of electricity generated by solar panels installed on the roof of his residence in Gulshan and supplied another 1,200 units to the national grid, said State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam.
He made the remarks at a review meeting on solar power, dengue prevention and development programmes held at the Cooperative Building in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Saturday, with upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) and deputy directors (local government) from across the country attending.
The state minister said the prime minister had set an example by generating and using this amount of solar power over the past three days.
He said rooftops of all government buildings, including the Cooperative Building, would be used to generate solar power to meet their own needs and supply surplus electricity to the government. He also called for treating electricity generation as a business.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan and State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari were present at the meeting.
Ahead of Durga Puja, Mir Shahe Alam urged UNOs to remain vigilant against attempts to destabilise the situation and said no disorder would be allowed.
On law and order, he said UNOs had been instructed to make every effort to ensure free, fair and impartial local government elections, adding that the government would provide all-out cooperation.
Addressing the UNOs, the state minister said poor people in their areas often seek immediate assistance from them and proposed an optional fund for every UNO to provide Tk2,000 to Tk5,000 in emergency support.
He said if the Ministry of Public Administration could not provide the funds, the Local Government Ministry would arrange allocations from revenue. He also said the issue of net metering for solar power would be resolved through discussions with upazila administrations.
