Lobib Ahmed : An endengered capped leaf monkey, also known as a capped langur, died after being electrocuted by a power line at a tea garden in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, on Saturday.
The monkey came into contact with an electrified wire at Amrailchhara Tea Garden around noon and fell to the ground.
After tea garden workers informed the Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation, its director Swapan Deb Sajal and environmental activist Rajdeep Deb Dip went to the scene and rescued the injured monkey. They later took it to the Sreemangal Upazila Livestock Office and Veterinary Hospital.
However, the animal died from its injuries before receiving treatment.
The carcass was later handed over to the Sreemangal Forest Department’s range office.
Kazi Nazmul Islam, range officer of the Sreemangal Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department, confirmed the death, saying the capped langur died after being electrocuted.
The capped langur is classified as an Endangered species in Bangladesh’s Red List. Globally, it is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
