Fuel price hike will not significantly affect essentials: minister

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said the rise in fuel prices will not have a major impact on the market for essential commodities if the supply chain remains uninterrupted.
He said the government was working to ensure uninterrupted supply so that higher fuel prices did not put additional pressure on essential commodities.
The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists after distributing raincoats among tea workers at the factory field of Lakkatura Tea Garden in Sylhet on Tuesday.
He said fuel prices had risen in the international market. In many countries, fuel prices are automatically adjusted in line with international prices. In Bangladesh, however, government-set price adjustments make the increase more visible to consumers.
Muktadir said higher fuel prices could increase transport and supply costs. However, the government was working to keep the supply chain normal and was holding discussions with importers and business leaders to identify weaknesses in the supply system.
“We are working to ensure that the price increase does not affect the prices of other commodities, does not fuel inflation and that the supply chain remains uninterrupted,” he said.
He expressed hope that prices would remain stable and that the fuel price increase would not have any noticeable impact on commodity prices.
