Death toll from floods, landslides rises to 59

The death toll from the recent floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall rose to 59, while 40 others were injured across seven districts, according to the latest situation report released by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on Saturday.
The ministry said seven districts Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj have been affected by the disaster.
A total of 56 upazilas, 374 unions and four municipalities have been inundated. Authorities have opened 73 shelter centres, where 298 people are currently taking refuge.
Among the fatalities, 32 deaths were reported in Cox’s Bazar, including 19 local residents and 13 Rohingyas, followed by 16 in Chattogram, seven in Bandarban, three in Rangamati and one in Moulvibazar.
Of the 40 injured, 25 were reported in Cox’s Bazar, 12 in Chattogram, two in Bandarban and one in Khagrachari.
According to the ministry, Chattogram has experienced partial waterlogging in 16 upazilas, while floodwaters affected 10 upazilas each in Khagrachhari and Cox’s Bazar, nine in Rangamati, seven in Bandarban, three in Habiganj and one in Moulvibazar.
To support the affected people, the government has allocated cash assistance, rice, corrugated iron (CI) sheets, house making grants, dry food, baby food and cattle feed to the affected districts.
The cumulative allocation for the seven worst-hit districts includes Tk2.30 crore in cash, 3,350 tonnes of rice, 4,200 bundles of corrugated iron sheets, and Tk1.26 crore for house reconstruction grants.
Besides, the remaining 57 districts have also received advance disaster assistance, bringing the nationwide allocation to Tk5.15 crore, 9,050 tonnes of rice, 4,200 bundles of CI sheets and Tk1.26 crore in housing grants.
