India has transferred its High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, appointing him as the next Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
The development was confirmed through an official notification issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Friday (10 April).
Pranay, who assumed charge as high commissioner in Dhaka in August 2022, has played a key role in managing bilateral relations during a period marked by significant political and diplomatic developments, Hindustan Times Bangla reported.
Prior to his posting in Bangladesh, he served as India’s ambassador to Vietnam.
His reassignment comes shortly after a meeting with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The meeting took place ahead of a planned visit to India by Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, where discussions reportedly focused on regional issues, including the situation in West Asia and ongoing energy challenges.
According to officials, the two leaders also discussed the import of diesel from India through pipeline infrastructure, along with broader topics such as strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing mutual cooperation.
During the meeting, Pranay conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his Bangladeshi counterpart.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasised that maintaining a positive approach could help build a stronger and more constructive relationship between Bangladesh and India. In response, Pranay expressed India’s interest in advancing ties with Bangladesh under Tarique’s leadership.
Diplomatic sources note that Pranay’s tenure in Dhaka coincided with a turbulent phase in Bangladesh’s domestic politics and bilateral relations. Despite periods of tension, including protests and diplomatic strains, ties between the two countries have recently shown signs of improvement following the formation of the new government in Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, speculation is mounting over who will succeed Pranay as India’s next high commissioner to Bangladesh, though no official announcement has yet been made.
