Bangladesh kept their Asian Games hopes alive with a nerve-shredding shoot-out victory over Hong Kong, sealing qualification for the upcoming Aichi Asian Games in Japan.
With their participation hanging in the balance, the men in red and green held their nerve to clinch a 3-2 win in the tie-breaker after a pulsating contest had ended 4-4 in regulation time.
The shoot-out began on a shaky note for Bangladesh as Rocky missed the opening attempt, raising fears of a historic setback missing out on Asian Games hockey for the first time. However, goalkeeper Biplob Kujur emerged as the hero, producing two crucial saves to swing the momentum back in Bangladesh’s favour.
Despite missing their fourth attempt which would have sealed the match early Bangladesh were given a late scare when Hong Kong converted their fifth to level the shoot-out at 2-2. With everything riding on the final attempt, Bangladesh held their composure, converting the Crucial strike to secure qualification. Rokan, Joy and Fazle Rabbi found the net in the shoot-out, with Rabbi’s effort ultimately proving decisive.
Earlier, Bangladesh had made a flying start to the match, taking a 2-0 lead within the opening five minutes through a penalty corner from Rocky and a penalty stroke by Amirul Islam. Hong Kong responded almost immediately with a penalty corner to reduce the deficit.
Bangladesh carried a slender 2-1 lead into the break after a goalless second quarter. However, Hong Kong struck early in the third quarter to restore parity. Ashraful Islam then put Bangladesh back in front in the 41st minute with a well-taken penalty corner.
The match continued to swing from end to end in a dramatic final quarter. Hong Kong equalised once again, only for Ashraful to restore Bangladesh’s lead within a minute. But the advantage was short-lived, as Hong Kong converted a penalty stroke to make it 4-4.
Bangladesh had opportunities to settle the contest in regulation time, earning three penalty corners in the closing stages, but failed to convert, forcing the match into a shoot-out.
The result ensures Bangladesh will feature in the classification 5th-6th place match of the qualifiers. With six teams advancing to the Asian Games, their place in Aichi is now secured.
