A mobile court on Tuesday sentenced a man to one month of imprisonment for illegally using irrigation to dry up a wetland and catch fish at Dharmapasha upazila in Sunamganj district on Tuesday.
The verdict was delivered around 10:00 AM by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Sonjoy Ghosh.
The convicted person has been identified as Islam Uddin, 27, son of late Abdul Malek of Sonui Kurshibari village under Paikurati union of the upazila.
Confirming the incident, Executive Magistrate Sonjoy Ghosh said to The Daily Observer that catching fish by draining water through irrigation is a clear violation of the Jalmahal leasing policy.
He noted that such activities cause serious damage to aquatic biodiversity and disrupt the natural ecosystem.
He also warned that strict legal action would be taken in the future if anyone is found violating the law, including cancellation of lease agreements to protect wetlands and preserve ecological balance.
