Jayiya Nagorik Party (NCP) leader and parliamentary candidate in Dhaka-8 constituency Nasiruddin Patwari demanded the expulsion of his rival, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, following an alleged physical assault at a local cultural event.
Speaking at an emergency press conference in Fakirapool, Patwari appealed directly to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman to take disciplinary action against Abbas, blaming the senior leader’s supporters for the incident.
The altercation reportedly occurred around 11:30 AM at Habibullah Bahar University College in Shantinagar during a “Pitha Utshob” (traditional cake festival).
Patwari, who attended as an invited guest, claimed he was targeted by a group of youths who shouted slogans at him, leading to a physical scuffle.
Following the incident, the NCP leader led a protest procession to the Fakirapool intersection before addressing the media.
Patwari described the incident as a premeditated attack orchestrated by a “force” loyal to Mirza Abbas.
He challenged the BNP leadership to choose between “sheltering miscreants” or upholding party discipline. “I leave the judgment of this attack to the people of Bangladesh,”
Patwari stated, asserting that the BNP Acting Chairman must decide whether to condone such violence or expel those responsible. He also alleged that the “mastermind” behind the chaos was a close associate of Abbas.
During the briefing, Patwari directed strong accusations at the college administration, claiming the principal was an appointee of the previous Awami League government and that the governing body was formed under Abbas’s influence.
He contrasted his own campaign with his opponent’s, stating he relies on neither “corruption money” nor “terror funds.” Invoking the legacy of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, he remarked that she would be ashamed of such conduct were she witnessing the current situation.
The NCP leader warned that the electorate would reject terror and corruption in the upcoming February 12 polls. He also questioned the Election Commission’s role, stating that candidates cannot remain in the field without guarantees of safety and a fair voting environment.
The press conference was attended by high-profile alliance figures, including NCP Convener Nahid Islam and local leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami.
