Man held with smuggled Indian goods in M’bazar

Police have arrested a man with huge Indian goods during a special operation at a courier service in Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar district on Tuesday.
The operation was led by Srimangal Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md. Aminul Islam, with Sub-Inspector Bablu Kumar Pal and his team conducting the raid at the S.A. Transport Courier Service office on Moulvibazar Road in the upazila at 7 PM.
The arrested individual is Abdul Kaiyum, 20, son of Muhibul Mia, a resident of Tikria village in the upazila.
The accused smuggled these goods from India and distributed them to various locations in Bangladesh through the courier service. He failed to provide any legal import documents for the seized items.
During the raid, police recovered 90,000 foreign cigarettes, 30 bottles of olive oil, 120 jars of Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream, and five sacks (150 kg) of Indian cumin (jeera). The estimated market value of the seized items is approximately Tk 11 lakh 10 thousand.
The OC said that a case has been filed under the Special Powers Act against the arrested suspect and his absconding accomplices.
The accused was sent to jail through the court on Wednesday afternoon, he added.
