At least 20 people lost their lives after a bus carrying over 50 passengers caught fire in the western Indian state of Rajasthan on Tuesday, according to local media and officials.
The tragic incident occurred as the bus was traveling between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, shortly after departing Jaisalmer around 3:00 pm (0930 GMT).
“Nineteen passengers died in the bus and one succumbed to burn injuries on the way to Jodhpur,” senior police officer Rajesh Meena told AFP.
According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), the fire broke out after smoke was seen coming from the rear of the bus. The driver stopped the vehicle on the roadside, but flames quickly engulfed it, leaving passengers with little time to escape.
Local broadcaster NDTV, citing unnamed police sources, reported that a short circuit may have triggered the fire, although this has not been officially confirmed.
