BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that the nation will suffer greatly if timely elections are not held.
Speaking at a book launch event at National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday, he stressed the importance of unity among all to meet the people’s democratic aspirations.
“People want change,” Fakhrul said. “We need to move forward with that goal in mind. An inclusive and neutral election is the only way to achieve our objectives. The country desperately needs an election and it must happen soon.”
He also highlighted the party’s long-standing struggle for democratic reforms; “We have fought for 15 years for the restoration of democracy. Many of our leaders have been victims of enforced disappearances. Despite the sacrifices, we must keep moving toward our goal.”
The event was organized to mark the release of the book “Roktakto July” (Bloody July), written by Syeda Fatema Salam and published by Iti Prokashon.
BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Hai Shikder and several others were also present in the event.
