Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have gathered the busiest area Shahbagh to join their pre-announced ‘Long March to Dhaka’, halting traffic in and around the area.
They started the protest at about 11AM on Wednesday demanding reforms in the engineering sector, including barring diploma engineers from using the title ‘engineer.’
For the same demands, the BUET students also took position at Shahbagh for five hours on Tuesday.
Abrar Faiyaz, a student the BUET, said, “They have initially blocked Shahbagh for the demands, they can also go to the other side for the three demands.”
It was seen that the students are taking a position at Shahbagh intersection. For this, buses that ply from Bangla Motor to Matsya Bhaban via Shahbagh have stopped at Shahbagh intersection. Vehicles fom Elephant Road to various destinations via Shahbagh has also been stopped.
The protesters’ three key demands are: preventing diploma engineers from using the title “engineer,” stopping promotions of diploma engineers to ninth grade of public service, and ensuring priority for graduate engineers in tenth-grade recruitment.
