NCP leader suspended over moral misconduct

Published: 18 June 2025, 2:37:15

Sarwar Tusher, Joint Convener of Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), has been suspended from all party activities following allegations of moral misconduct involving leaked audio conversation with female party leader.

Party has given him five days to provide written explanation to Political Council and Investigation Committee.

Journalist Jawad Nirjhor has been at the centre of the controversy after leaking both an audio clip and text message screenshots allegedly involving NCP Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar.

On Monday, he published a 3-minute and 50-second excerpt from a longer 47-minute phone call, claiming it captured Tushar making inappropriate advances toward a female party leader and requesting her photo late at night.

“Such unethical behaviour is deeply regrettable for both party and country,” Nirjhor stated, demanding Tushar’s expulsion.

He escalated the allegations by posting screenshots of text messages on Facebook, captioning them, “Sarwar Tushar’s historic texts! Because of you, the reputation of the entire NCP is at risk. The nation has now seen how NCP leaders treat women.”

Joint Member Secretary (Office) Saleh Uddin Sifat confirmed party received no written complaint but acted on public allegations.

“Issue regarding moral misconduct has been brought against Sarwar Tusher. Matter has been referred to investigation committee,” Sifat told The Daily Observer.

Tusher denied wrongdoing through lengthy Facebook post, calling accusations “politically motivated smear campaign.”

He condemned targeting of female colleague, stating, “Respected female central leader is being publicly shamed by attaching her name to mine with abusive language. This is disgraceful.”

Controversy has linked Tusher’s name with NCP Joint Convener Tajnuva Jabeen, who issued statement denying involvement.

“Those circulating audio clips claiming it’s my voice should know we could easily name real person but choose not to,” she wrote, describing it as “calculated cyber attack.”

This marks second harassment allegation against Tusher. In January 2021, Beethi Saptarshi made sexual harassment complaint, leading to five-member investigation committee headed by Jahangirnagar University teacher Mirza Taslima.

However, human rights activist Shahidul Alam confirmed that the matter was never conclusively resolved.

Party’s swift action demonstrates commitment to maintaining standards whilst five-day deadline suggests urgency in resolving matter that threatens NCP’s reputation.
