The government is bringing 17 new radiotherapy machines to expand and decentralise cancer treatment services across the country, health and family welfare minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain said on Wednesday.
Of the machines, six will be installed in Dhaka and 11 outside the capital, he said at a press briefing at secretariat in the capital.
The initiative aims to allow cancer patients to receive treatment closer to their homes at lower costs while reducing pressure on healthcare facilities in Dhaka, the minister said.
The government is also focusing on increasing the use of modern technology in cancer treatment and expanding services outside Dhaka, Sakhawat said.
Health services division secretary ANM Bazlur Rashid, health education division secretary AKM Benjamin Riyazi and directorate general of health services director general Professor Dr Prabhat Chandra Biswas, among other officials, attended the briefing.
