Russia’s youth team will participate in FIFA’s inaugural Under-15 World Cup festival in Azerbaijan from October 24 to 30, marking its partial return to international football after a four-year absence.
The decision comes after FIFA and UEFA banned Russian teams from international competitions following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia has been drawn alongside Türkiye, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Sierra Leone and Sudan. The tournament will feature 191 teams, with matches played in an eight-a-side format and 20-minute halves.
The relaxation applies only to youth football. Sanctions on Russia’s senior national team and clubs remain in place.
Only 37 of UEFA’s 55 member associations entered the draw. Germany, the Netherlands and Ukraine are among the countries not participating.
