2,500 Kulaura tea workers get raincoats from MP

Kulaura Correspondent : A Member of Parliament distributed raincoats among 2,500 female tea workers in Kulaura on Sunday (September 13), fulfilling a key electoral promise.

Moulvibazar-2 lawmaker Md Shawkatul Islam inaugurated the distribution scheme as the chief guest at Gazipur Tea Estate. The initiative aims to alleviate the hardships of tea garden workers during the monsoon season.

Speaking at the event, the MP recalled seeing workers suffer in the rain during his election campaign. He stated that he raised the issue in the National Parliament to secure protective gear for them. He added that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman launched a broader programme to distribute 20,000 raincoats across the Sylhet region using private CSR funds.

Kulaura Upazila Social Services Officer Pranesh Chandra Barma chaired the ceremony, while local BNP leader Altaf Hossain moderated it. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sanjida Akter, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Pronoy Biswas, Kulaura Police Station OC Zahirul Islam Munna, and local BNP leaders were present as special guests.

Senior officials from various tea estates and local youth leaders also addressed the gathering.

Organisers later distributed raincoats to 2,500 permanent female workers across 11 tea gardens in the upazila, including Chatlapur, Langla, Luayuni, Tilakpur, Tarapasha, Pallakandi, Zimai, Rehana, Gazipur, Holichhara, and Hingazia.
