BNP celebrates 48 years of political journey

September 1 marks the 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The BNP was founded on September 1, 1978, by then-president Ziaur Rahman at Ramna Park in Dhaka. Following his death in 1981, Khaleda Zia led the party from 1983. Tarique Rahman became the party’s acting chairman in 2018 and its chairman in January 2026.
The BNP returned to power after securing a two-thirds majority in the 13th parliamentary election held on February 12, 2026, making Tarique Rahman the country’s Prime Minister.
In a message marking the anniversary, Tarique Rahman extended greetings to party leaders, members and supporters and paid tribute to Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
As part of the celebrations, Tarique Rahman will pay tribute to at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. The BNP will also organise a discussion meeting on September 5, along with fish-release and tree-planting programmes.
