Charge sheet filed against Hasina, Joy, 27 others in July Uprising murder case

Police have recently submitted the charge sheet against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and 27 others in the murder case of Abdur Rahman Jisan, who was shot dead in Matuail of Jatrabari in the capital during the July Uprising.
Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Kawsar Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the court on 8 July. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque fixed 6 October for the hearing in the case, said SI Mohin Uddin of the prosecution department.
According to the charge sheet, victim Jisan left his home on the evening of 20 July 2024 to provide drinking water to students and people participating in the anti-discrimination student movement in the Matuail area.
The charge sheet said Jisan was hit by a bullet in the head above his right eye, slightly below his eyebrow. Locals later rescued him and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Nine days after Jisan’s death, his wife, Rabeya Misti, allegedly died by suicide on 29 July, according to the charge sheet. Jisan’s mother was forced to bury him at the Matuail cemetery when some of the accused allegedly obstructed the burial and threatened to kill family members.
Jisan’s father, Babul Mia, filed a case with the court on 25 August 2024 over his son’s death, naming 27 people as accused.
Apart from Hasina and Joy, the other accused in the charge sheet include former prime minister’s advisers Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique and Salman F Rahman, and former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Tajul Islam, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haq Inu, Anisul Huq and Jahangir Kabir Nanak.
Former MPs Kazi Monirul Islam Monu and Mashiur Rahman Sajal, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Dhaka DB chief Harun-or-Rashid, former RAB director general Harun-or-Rashid, former police officer Biplab Kumar Sarkar and Abul Hasan have also been named as accused.
Others named in the charge sheet include Harunur Rashid Khan Munna, Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, Mehedi Hasan Suman, Shanto Nur Khan, Rabiul Islam Helali, Shafiqul Islam Khan Dilu, Abul Kalam Anu, Mostak Ahmed, Faisal Khandaker and Jahangir Alam. They are all leaders of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
