Mirza Fakhrul sworn in as 23rd president

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh on Friday.
Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal administered the oath of office to the newly elected president at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 7:30pm.
Upon his arrival at Bangabhaban, the president-elect was welcomed by the Military Secretary to the President and other senior officials. They escorted him to VVIP Chair-1, where he was received by Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman, cabinet members, senior government officials, leaders of different political parties and several hundred distinguished guests, including ambassadors and high commissioners, attended the state ceremony.
The swearing-in followed former BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul’s election as president on Thursday. He was elected by members of parliament in the country’s first competitive presidential election in nearly 35 years.
