PM meets winners of International, European Girls’ Mathematics Olympiads

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday met Bangladeshi students who won medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO).
The courtesy meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
During the meeting, the medal-winning students exchanged greetings with the Prime Minister and shared their experiences and achievements at the mathematics competitions. The Prime Minister congratulated them and wished them greater success in the future.
Representatives of the Bangladesh Girls’ Mathematics Foundation (BGMF) sought the Prime Minister’s support to expand and strengthen mathematics Olympiad activities at the grassroots level. The Prime Minister assured them of all necessary government support for the initiative.
When a proposal was made to establish a fund to conduct and expand mathematics Olympiad activities at the school level, the Prime Minister immediately agreed to provide funding through the Ministry of Education.
The Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee (BdMO) also proposed introducing activity-oriented mathematics at the school level, to which the Prime Minister agreed.
A proposal was also made to introduce a separate mathematics proficiency test for school teachers, modelled on the IELTS examination for assessing English-language proficiency. The Prime Minister assured them that he would give serious consideration to the proposal.
The Prime Minister said the government would provide any assistance needed in the future to expand mathematics education and Olympiad activities across the country.
Among those present were Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon; Prime Minister’s Adviser on the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office Mahdi Amin; International Mathematical Olympiad national coach Mahbubul Alam Majumdar; Bangladesh Girls’ Mathematics Foundation Chair Professor Sadia Hamid Kazi; and Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee member Md Abdul Hakim Khan.
The medal-winning students present at the meeting were Monami Zaman of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, who won bronze medals at both the IMO and EGMO; Md Raihan Siddiqui of Chattogram College, who won an IMO silver medal; Jawad Hamim Chowdhury of Dhaka Imperial College, who won an IMO bronze medal; Mohammad Marzuk Rahman of Cantonment English School and College, who won an IMO bronze medal; Tahsin Khan of Ananda Mohan College, who won an IMO bronze medal; M Jamiul Hossain of Rajuk Uttara Model School and College, who won an IMO bronze medal; and Saji Sehnai of Rajuk Uttara Model School and College, who won an EGMO bronze medal.
