US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor visited Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen, reaffirming Washington’s support for displaced Rohingya and calling on the international community to step up assistance.
The world’s largest refugee settlement hosts more than one million Rohingya refugees. The United States has remained one of its leading humanitarian donors and urged partners worldwide to increase their contributions, according to a Facebook post by the US Embassy in Dhaka.
Gor is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday before concluding his three-day visit to Bangladesh.
The US special envoy arrived in Dhaka on Thursday for a high-level visit, marking the first trip to Bangladesh by a senior US official since the country’s 13th parliamentary election.
