New President to be elected in September: Law Minister

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman on Saturday said the new President will be elected at the regular parliamentary session scheduled for September.
There is no need to convene a special session of Parliament to elect the country’s new President, he told reporters responding to a question at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital.
When asked whether legal action would be taken against recently resigned President Md. Shahabuddin, the law minister declined to comment, saying he did not want to make any remarks on the matter at this time.
Former President Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as Bangladesh’s 22nd president on 24 April 2023. Under the Constitution, his five-year term had been due to expire in April 2028.
Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on Friday, citing ill health.
He submitted his resignation letter to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad in the afternoon.
Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the responsibilities of the acting President in accordance with the Constitution following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin.
