The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has uncovered fresh information while investigating allegations of illicit wealth accumulation against former Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun-or-Rashid. Following the discovery of land and plots allegedly owned by him in Cox’s Bazar and the capital’s Badda area, legal proceedings have begun to seize the properties.
A court ordered the attachment of the assets after the ACC filed an application seeking their seizure.
According to a report aired by a private television channel, ACC findings revealed that Harun-or-Rashid held memberships at several elite clubs in the capital, including those in Banani and Uttara. Allegations suggest that he spent large sums of money to obtain these memberships. Investigators also found evidence that he allegedly used his influence to secure membership at the Narayanganj Club.
The ACC is currently investigating a case against Harun involving the alleged accumulation of illegal assets worth around Tk17.5 crore.
Officials involved in the investigation said the commission sought court orders to freeze and seize his movable and immovable assets to prevent their transfer, sale or concealment. The court subsequently granted the application.
Meanwhile, as part of an ongoing inquiry into allegations of embezzlement of Tk470 crore against former National Life Insurance Chairman Murshed Alam, NH Spinning Mills Managing Director Abul Hossain has been asked to appear before the ACC on 14 June.
The commission said he had been summoned to provide a statement to the inquiry officer.
In a separate development, the Public Works Department has formed a coordination committee to assess the value of assets belonging to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Noor Mohammad, who is also facing an ACC case.
The ACC said investigations and inquiries into the high-profile cases were ongoing and that necessary legal action would be taken based on the evidence obtained.
