The Election Commission (EC) has published a gazette declaring Nusrat Tabassum, Joint Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and candidate of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) to a reserved women’s seat.
On Tuesday (5 May), Returning Officer and EC Joint Secretary Md Moin Uddin Khan told reporters that Nusrat Tabassum had submitted her nomination paper for the reserved women’s seat. “We had declared her elected unopposed yesterday. Today, the gazette has been published in her name,” he said.
On 21 April, the last day for submission of nomination papers, Nusrat Tabassum submitted her papers 19 minutes after the deadline, and her nomination was not initially accepted by the returning officer.
She subsequently moved to court, which directed the EC to accept her nomination and take necessary steps in accordance with the law.
Following the court order, the EC accepted her nomination, and after scrutiny, declared it valid on 2 May.
Earlier, the nomination of another NCP candidate from the Jamaat alliance, Monira Sharmin, was cancelled by the returning officer due to complications related to government employment.
