PM inaugurates canal re-excavation prog in Jashore

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has inaugurated the re-excavation of the Ulshi Canal in Jashore’s Sharsha upazila as part of the government’s nationwide initiative to restore rivers, canals, water bodies, and reservoirs.
The programme is one of the current government’s key election pledges aimed at protecting the environment and strengthening climate resilience across Bangladesh.
The formal inauguration took place at around 11:30am on Monday.
Among those present at the event were Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad, State Minister for Power and Energy Aninda Islam Amit, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Water Resources and the Bangladesh Water Development Board.
Officials said the nationwide dredging and re-excavation programme is intended to improve water flow, reduce waterlogging, strengthen irrigation systems, and help communities adapt to climate-related challenges.
