Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has invited Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Nabin to visit Bangladesh, signalling a fresh start in ties between the ruling BNP and India’s governing party.
The Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser and BNP Joint Secretary General, Humayun Kabir, delivered the formal invitation to the BJP leadership in New Delhi. Kabir is currently visiting India alongside Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.
During the visit, Kabir met senior BJP foreign affairs leaders Vijay Chauthaiwale and Shishir Bajoria. Bajoria, a member of the Overseas Friends of BJP core committee, has maintained long-standing links with the top leadership of both the BNP and the Awami League.
BJP leaders stated that as a democratic party, they respect the mandate of the Bangladeshi people. They expressed a keen interest in building a strong relationship with the BNP-led government, similar to their past engagement with the Awami League.
During the meeting, the BJP leaders presented Kabir with a copy of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s book, Why Bharat Matters. The discussions covered various aspects of bilateral ties, including New Delhi’s expectations and security concerns.
The BJP leadership raised the issue of anti-India insurgent activities, which India had previously alleged occurred during past BNP tenures. They stressed that such incidents must not recur.
In response, Kabir quoted the Prime Minister, assuring the BJP that the current government remains fully committed to ensuring that no one uses Bangladeshi soil for anti-India activities.
This marks the first official visit to India by Khalilur Rahman and Humayun Kabir since the formation of the new government. Earlier in the trip, they held high-level talks with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
