A measles vaccination campaign will begin in the two Dhaka city corporations, as well as in Mymensingh and Barishal city corporations, on 12 April, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain announced on Tuesday.
The programme will be expanded nationwide from 3 May, he said.
“We will continue this vaccination drive without interruption. To ensure public health and keep future generations healthy, this programme will continue,” the minister said.
Sakhawat shared the information while speaking to journalists after a discussion marking World Health Day.
The event was held at the Shaheed Abu Sayed International Convention Centre of Bangladesh Medical University in the capital, where he attended as the chief guest.
Responding to a question, the minister said shortcomings in vaccination efforts over the past five and a half years under the previous two governments have placed a burden on the current administration.
He added that the vaccination campaign began on 5 April in parts of the country. On the first day, the target was to vaccinate 76,000 children, and 73,000 received the vaccine.
The measles situation in Bangladesh has worsened amid a surge in suspected and confirmed cases, as well as fatalities.
