A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered former Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to be sent to jail in a case filed with Lalbagh Police Station over an attempted murder linked to the anti-discrimination movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order as police produced Chowdhury before the court and pleaded for a two-day remand in the case. The defence, however, argued for her bail.
According to the case documents, unarmed students and people brought out a peaceful procession in the Azimpur Government Staff Quarter area in Lalbagh as part of the anti-discrimination student movement. At one stage, police and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations allegedly opened fire on the rally, leaving several people dead and injured.
During the incident, protester Ashraful Fahim sustained bullet injuries to his left eye, head and different parts of his body. He was rushed to hospital and underwent treatment at several hospitals but permanently lost vision in his left eye.
The victim later filed the case with Lalbagh Police Station on 17 July 2025.
A team of the Detective Branch (DB) arrested Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury from her Dhanmondi residence at around 4:30am on Tuesday. Later, she was shown arrested in the Lalbagh Police Station case before being produced before the court.
