The Bangladesh youth table tennis team left the country on Monday for Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, aiming to perform well in the upcoming South Asian Junior competition.
The tournament will take place from 8 to 11 April and will act as the South Asian qualifier for the 30th Asian Youth Championships 2026. Teams from SAARC countries, including hosts India, will take part.
Bangladesh will take part in the Under-15 and Under-19 categories for both boys and girls, competing in singles, mixed doubles and team events.
A 20-member delegation is travelling, led by Bangladesh Table Tennis Federation general secretary Captain AM Maksud Ahmed Sonnet. Tahmina Tarmim Binu is the team manager, while Dhananjay Shil Tirtha and Regen Barua are coaching the side.
The squad includes 16 players, most of whom are current or former Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP) students. The team underwent a 33-day training camp at BKSP.
Last year in Kathmandu, Bangladesh won seven bronze medals but did not qualify for the Asian Youth Championships.
Sonnet said that the team is hopeful of qualifying this time and believes the players will make the country proud.
