The first round of open ticket sales for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has commenced, with FIFA setting the maximum price for a final match ticket at USD10,990 (approximately Tk13 lakhs 45 thousand).
This stands as the highest price ever for a general gallery ticket in football history. Interestingly, the host nations—the USA, Canada, and Mexico—had initially stated in their bid book that the maximum price for a final ticket would be USD1,550 (Tk1 lakh 89 thousand.
When tickets were released last December for official fan groups of participating nations, the maximum price was USD8,680 (Tk10 lakhs 62 thousand). However, when sales opened to the general public last Wednesday, prices surged even further. For comparison, the highest-priced gallery ticket for the 2022 Qatar World Cup final was USD1,604 (Tk1 lakh 96 thousand).
FIFA has not released a comprehensive price list. The governing body is reportedly using a “dynamic pricing” model, where ticket costs fluctuate based on real-time demand.
The skyrocketing prices were labeled a “betrayal” of football fans by many late last year. Although FIFA announced a limited number of low-cost tickets for $60 (Tk7,346) in December, the high costs observed during Wednesday’s public sale have reignited the controversy.
The tournament is set to begin on 11 June, with the final scheduled for 19 July at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA. FIFA has withheld data regarding the number of tickets available in each category.
The price of final tickets in this public sale has increased by nearly 38% compared to last December. Alongside Category 1 tickets priced at USD10,990, prices have also risen in other categories.
In Category 2, ticket prices have increased by 32.78%, rising from USD5,575 to USD7,380 (Tk9 lakhs). In Category 3, ticket prices have risen by 38.23%, moving from USD4,185 to USD5,785 (Tk7 lakhs).
FIFA launched its official resale platform last Thursday. According to the BBC, one seller listed a single ticket for a whopping USD82,780 (Tk1 crore 1 lakh 34 thousand). FIFA gave no prior warning regarding these price hikes before the latest round of sales began.
