Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir held a meeting with Kazuiki Kataoka, country representative of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), at his office at the Secretariat on Thursday.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed in detail various aspects of expanding bilateral trade and investment as well as strengthening mutual economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan, said a press release.
The minister highlighted the prospects and opportunities for increased Japanese investment in Bangladesh and sought Japan’s cooperation in areas such as special economic zones, infrastructure development, industrialisation, and export diversification.
He noted that Bangladesh’s stable economic growth, skilled workforce, and investment-friendly policies have created a favorable environment for foreign investors.
Muktadir described the proposed Japan–Bangladesh Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) as a milestone for enhancing bilateral trade and investment. He said the agreement would also serve as a reference point for Bangladesh in negotiating similar EPA deals with other countries.
Kazuiki Kataoka said the investment climate in Bangladesh has improved since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assumed office following the national election. He expressed optimism that the signing of the EPA between the two countries would further expand trade opportunities and mentioned that many Japanese investors have already shown interest in investing in Bangladesh.
He also noted that Japanese investments have contributed to major infrastructure projects such as the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and the Dhaka Metro Rail. He added that Japanese investment would help create employment opportunities and support infrastructure development in Bangladesh.
Kataoka further assured that JETRO would continue its support in strengthening commercial ties between the two countries and would also play a role in promoting Bangladeshi products in the Japanese market.
Both sides expressed their commitment to working together to further advance the strong economic partnership between Bangladesh and Japan.
