A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered the imprisonment of three individuals, including Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, former general secretary of “Slogan 71” organization, in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The order was issued by Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana after the accused were produced before the court.
The other two accused are Md Asif Ahmed Soikat, a former employment affairs secretary of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) unit at Shahidullah Hall of Dhaka University and Abdul Al Mamun.
According to court proceedings, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Md. Ashadul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station, requested that the three be kept in custody.
After hearing the petition, the court directed that they be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, on Saturday around 3:00 PM, several members of Awami League, Jubo League and BCL gathered near the Shahidullah Hall while playing the historic March 7 speech on loudspeakers.
Police reportedly went to the scene after receiving information, at which point those present attempted to flee.
With assistance from local residents, police detained Asif Ahmed Soikat from the location.
Later that night at around 9:30 PM, Emi and Abdul Al Mamun gathered with 10 to 15 unidentified individuals in front of gate no. 1 of National Museum.
The case states that while Taraweeh prayers were being held at the nearby Shahbagh Police Station mosque, the accused used loudspeakers to chant provocative slogans and attempted to revive the activities of a banned organization with the intention of conspiring against the government.
Police further alleged that the accused obstructed police duties and attempted to snatch Soikat from police custody.
Amid the situation, a group of students led by Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) representatives AB Zubair and Mohammad Mosaddeque detained Abdul Al Mamun and Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi and handed them over to the police.
Following the incident, Shahbagh Police Station filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act on Sunday, with police acting as the complainant.
