Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the government’s Family Card distribution program on March 10 from the Korail slum area in the capital, Social Welfare Minister Dr. AB M Zahid Hossain confirmed on Tuesday.
The launch venue was shifted from the originally planned location of Bogura after the Prime Minister’s visit to the northern district was postponed due to an upcoming by-election. Tarique had initially been scheduled to travel to Bogura on the same date to inaugurate the program there.
The by-election in the Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency is set for April 9. The seat fell vacant after Tarique Rahmn, who won from both Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 in the 13th national parliamentary election, relinquished the Bogura seat before taking his oath as required by law.
The Election Commission has scheduled the by-election, with BNP district committee president Rezaul Karim Badsha nominated as the party’s candidate.
Badsha explained that holding the Family Card distribution program in Bogura while the by-election process is underway could have raised questions about potential violations of electoral rules.
He said the Prime Minister chose to respect the regulations by shifting the event elsewhere.
Earlier on February 27, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam had announced during a visit to Bogura’s Shibganj that the Prime Minister would come to Bogura on March 10 to launch the program.
Three candidates from BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Bangladesh Development Party have submitted their nomination papers for the Bogura-6 by-election.
The Family Card initiative is part of the government’s broader social welfare strategy aimed at reaching underprivileged communities like Korail slum.
