Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and their daughter Zaima Rahman, paid tribute to the Language Movement martyrs at the Central Shaheed Minar in the early hours of 21 February.
Just before midnight, the President arrived at the Central Shaheed Minar. After placing flowers at the altar, he stood in silence for a short while in respect and then departed the premises.
Following President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s tribute, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman proceeded to the Shaheed Minar. He laid a wreath at the martyr’s altar and observed a moment of silence in honour of the language heroes. Prayers were then offered seeking eternal peace for the departed souls.
At 12:12am, the Prime Minister, accompanied by members of the Cabinet, placed floral tributes at the altar. Ministers, state ministers and advisers to the Prime Minister were present on the occasion.
Subsequently, the Prime Minister, along with his wife and daughter, laid flowers once again at the altar and observed a brief silence in remembrance of the martyrs.
It may be noted that, following a United Nations resolution adopted in 2010, 21 February is observed worldwide each year as International Mother Language Day.
