At least 10 people were dead after a shooting Sunday at Sydney’s Bondi beach, police told AFP, without saying if that toll includes a shooter.
National broadcaster ABC reported that one of the shooters was among the dead and that 12 additional people were wounded.
Police shot dead one attacker at the scene and arrested a second, who remains in critical condition. Two police officers were also injured during the incident.
Authorities confirmed there is no longer an active threat but urged residents to avoid the area as emergency operations continue, Australian Broadcasting Corp reported.
Witnesses described gunfire erupting near beachgoers, including women and children who sought shelter in nearby homes. One gunman, identified as Narveed Akram from Sydney’s south-west, is under investigation while police conduct raids at his home.
The attack, occurring on the first night of Chanukah, has been described by a Jewish federal MP as a “terror attack” and “horrifying tragedy.”
Hospitals in Sydney received a surge of victims as authorities work to provide care and investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
