The Postal Vote BD app has recorded 307,577 registrations from Bangladeshi expatriates, marking a landmark surge of interest as overseas citizens prepare to participate in the country’s first-ever postal voting process for the upcoming national election and referendum.
As of 10:00 AM on Thursday, the Election Commission (EC) reported that 307,577 overseas voters had completed registration through the Postal Vote BD app.
Of them, 284,349 are men and 23,228 are women. Registered voters will be able to cast ballots in both the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and the upcoming referendum.
Officials described the strong turnout as a significant advancement in ensuring inclusive democratic rights for expatriates.
Country-wise, Saudi Arabia tops the list with 84,600 registrants, followed by Qatar (25,257), the United States (20,755), the United Arab Emirates (19,852), Malaysia (18,156), Singapore (15,294), the United Kingdom (13,663), Oman (12,625), Italy (9,965), Canada (9,852), South Korea (9,602), Australia (8,221), Kuwait (8,204) and Japan (7,068).
The EC also reminded that government employees on election duty who are staying outside their voting area, as well as voters in legal custody, may register through the app until December 25.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed that the out-of-country registration deadline has been extended until midnight on December 25, adding that any eligible Bangladeshi abroad can register by downloading the app from the Google Play Store or App Store.
Additionally, the EC has extended the deadline for address corrections on the app until 9:00am on December 14 for expatriates in seven countries: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Malaysia, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.
No further corrections will be allowed for registrants in other countries.
The Commission urged expatriates to provide accurate and complete addresses; including workplace or a known person’s address if necessary, warning that postal ballots will not be delivered without proper address information.
The Postal Vote BD app was launched on November 18 by the Chief Election Commissioner, along with the voter registration schedule for 148 countries.
To vote, expatriates must register using a mobile number from the country where they reside.
