Bangladesh closed the opening day of Dhaka Test at 292 for 4, with Mushfiqur Rahim remaining unbeaten on 99 in what is his landmark 100th Test match.
When the scheduled 90 overs were completed, umpires briefly discussed the possibility of an additional over with Ireland’s captain, but eventually called stumps; leaving Mushfiqur just one run short of a century.
He will resume on strike on the second morning, needing a single to become the 11th batter in Test history to score a hundred in their 100th Test.
Winning the toss at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto opted to bat without hesitation. Openers Shadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy provided a solid start with a 52-run stand.
Shadman scored 35 with six boundaries, while Joy contributed 34.
Bangladesh lost their third wicket at 95 when Shanto departed for 8.
From there, Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim rebuilt the innings with a 107-run partnership. Mominul played a patient knock of 63 off 128 deliveries before falling.
Mushfiqur continued in control, completing his fifty during the stand with Mominul and later adding 90 valuable runs with Liton Das. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter faced 187 balls for his unbeaten 99, striking five boundaries. Liton supported with 47 off 86 deliveries.
Ireland used six bowlers, but only Andy McBrine found success, taking all four Bangladeshi wickets for 82 runs in his 26 overs. Matthew Humphreys and Gavin Hoey bowled lengthy spells without reward.
If Mushfiqur reaches his century on the second morning, he will join an elite group including Ricky Ponting, David Warner, Joe Root, Hashim Amla, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Javed Miandad; players who have scored centuries in their 100th Test.
